Energy costs were a consistent source of pressure for brewers, with a reliance on gas for process heat leaving businesses vulnerable to price fluctuations. Emissions and clean manufacturing were also becoming increasingly important for customers.

In this webinar, a collaboration between the Independent Brewers Association and the Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity, we shared some of the renewable heat technologies that brewers could consider, as well as actions businesses could take in the short term to ensure energy and energy expenditure weren’t being wasted. The webinar included the presentation of results from renewable heat feasibility studies conducted for Brick Lane Brewing and Barrett Burston Malting, as well as an update on the electrification of all thermal loads at Four Pines Brewery.

Presenters for this webinar:

Sabrina Kunz

CEO

Sabrina explored renewable heat technologies for brewers, highlighting short-term actions to reduce energy waste, costs and improve efficiency.

Douglas Russell

Engineering Director, Energy Management

AND

Jon Seltin

Head Brewer

Jon and Douglas explore the opportunities and challenges of decarbonising brewery process heat. Using Brick Lane Brewing as a case study, they examine energy efficiency, heat pumps, electric boilers and thermal energy storage, highlighting how energy tariffs, grid emissions and site conditions influence the feasibility of electrification.

Chris Fox

Managing Director

AND

Derek Schaefer

Project Director

Flexigen explores renewable heat solutions for breweries and maltings, including geothermal and air source heat pumps, biomass boilers and heat recovery. Drawing on real-world projects, the presentation demonstrates how these technologies can reduce energy consumption, recover wasted heat and significantly reduce Scope 1 emissions.

Jarrod Leak

CEO

This webinar explored renewable heat options for breweries, including heat pumps, electric boilers, biomass and thermal energy storage, alongside funding opportunities and practical tools to support the transition away from fossil fuels.
